Besides the fact that the XL105 has simultaneous plate change and a top speed of 15,000sph compared to the SM102s 13,000sph, what other advantages does the 105 have over the 102?

It all depends on which 102 you get if you get the last model one cd 102 with vireo etc then other than what you said not a massive amount. If it was me personally having worked extensively on both I would get the 102 over the 105 any day of the week if your not bothered about the speed mainly because I think they are more reliable and print a better job and as an engineer nicer to work on. but they are bringing out the new 102 which is basically a cd style 105.And the last 102s do 15,000sph and the 105xl will do 18,000sph

  • Thanks LLs.

I should also add, in case it makes a difference to peoples views, that we would be perfecting 100% of the time
and running with a reel sheeter.

If you perfecting all the time and you are going to use a cutstar then you would be better off with the xl 105 reason being is they have the long perfectors on them which seem to be alot more consistant than the 102 ones what are you looking for a 5 back 5?

The XL105 and SM102 are different in more ways than they are simular. If buying a new on or a recent used one they both will have the same feeder and delivery. The printing units however are lightyears appart. From the inking unit that has occilators that go into a non occilating mode when not in production. Seperate blanket and impression cylinder washers that both utilize a towel for cleaning which is cleaner and used less solvant. SM102 does not have impression washer and a blanket washer that uses a brush style washer, this means much more solvant used, much more maintenance, and a pain in the neck to service. Much better gripper and gripper bar design in the XL as well also. SM gripper design is virtually unchanged in 20 years. Cylinder configuration is no comparison as well. SM has a single diameter impression cylinder and a 3 point transfer needed between impression cylinders making marking and the ability to run board difficult. XL has double diameter impression cylinder, single transfer point between impression cylinders making marking and the ability to run board a breeze. XL will do 18kiph vs the SM 15kiph unless you have a perfector which will take the XL to 15kiph and the SM to 13kiph. Its rare that I go into a shop that has an XL that is not running wide open reguardless of paper, board or tissue. Its equaly rare that I go into a print shop with an SM that is running wide open reguardless of paper. In my opinion the XL is a no brainer if you have the extra money for one. Far better print quality and much easier to maintain. Only two reasons I can see to even consider buying an SM over an XL is if you simply cannont afford to pay for the XL, or you need to have a perfector and again cannot afford the addition cost of an XL perfector. I feel you are doing yourself a huge disservice by not considering the XL, well worth the additional cost.

The xl uk side is way more expensive but with what your wanting from the machine a xl 105 might be better for your needs. if your in the UK speak to a company called Galloways in Poynton Cheshire they have both the xl and the last 102cd thy will could tell you which they find best.

Every day of the week the Xl will out preform the sm102 in productivity and quality. The debate over one press prints a better solid and the other prints a better dot, the XL's "hycolor" does them both.

but it does not make it more reliable from what we have had to fix on 105s and from what I have seen personally I still think a 102 prints a nicer job but that's my opinion and i am an engineer not a printer so I look at them in a different light at the end of the day they are both quality machines in their own right and for the op the 105 would be better for what he wants to do

After printing a few hundred million impressions on an SM102 and fighting marking on the down side at least once a week, from what i see the XL should do a better job. It doesn't matter what press you have, the press is only as good as the operator ! And I have to say some of the people I work around I wish they would retire, for they make more problems for themself and other shifts. Your operator will make or break you.
