The XL105 and SM102 are different in more ways than they are simular. If buying a new on or a recent used one they both will have the same feeder and delivery. The printing units however are lightyears appart. From the inking unit that has occilators that go into a non occilating mode when not in production. Seperate blanket and impression cylinder washers that both utilize a towel for cleaning which is cleaner and used less solvant. SM102 does not have impression washer and a blanket washer that uses a brush style washer, this means much more solvant used, much more maintenance, and a pain in the neck to service. Much better gripper and gripper bar design in the XL as well also. SM gripper design is virtually unchanged in 20 years. Cylinder configuration is no comparison as well. SM has a single diameter impression cylinder and a 3 point transfer needed between impression cylinders making marking and the ability to run board difficult. XL has double diameter impression cylinder, single transfer point between impression cylinders making marking and the ability to run board a breeze. XL will do 18kiph vs the SM 15kiph unless you have a perfector which will take the XL to 15kiph and the SM to 13kiph. Its rare that I go into a shop that has an XL that is not running wide open reguardless of paper, board or tissue. Its equaly rare that I go into a print shop with an SM that is running wide open reguardless of paper. In my opinion the XL is a no brainer if you have the extra money for one. Far better print quality and much easier to maintain. Only two reasons I can see to even consider buying an SM over an XL is if you simply cannont afford to pay for the XL, or you need to have a perfector and again cannot afford the addition cost of an XL perfector. I feel you are doing yourself a huge disservice by not considering the XL, well worth the additional cost.
