Anyone know of a water-based gloss or matte coating that can run in ink fountain? We don't use it often and need to replace products that are no-longer available. Need to be able to print on-top of coating.

Thanks for your help.

Kentucky Shine AQ runs in the ink train but must be used with care and watched closely. I don't think you can print over it once it's applied though; AQ coating is usually a final step in the printing process because it seals the sheet.

  • Mark, what was the discontinued product? Will you print over it with offset ink, toner or inkjet? The replacement needs to match that second step as well as running in the ink train. I'd have the coating supplier confirm both and test the finished combination on your stock before committing.

ink fountain applied aq coating is a nightmare to run. You will not like all the work involved in cleaning this stuff off your rollers if you let the press sit for too long without taking the proper precautions. The press MUST always be moving, and the drying retarder sprayed on the rollers for even the shortest periods of down time. Forget to do this just once and you will never forget again. Its advisable to do your full make-ready and be ready to run BEFORE you even put this stuff in the fountain. Once you start running you want to keep running. If you must stop the press even for a blanket wash and load change its advised that you spray your rollers.

Let's not forget that if you're not running enough coating film, it easily starts picking up color when trying to do it inline. It requires a lot of baby sitting.
