inline varnishing on top of 4/c process can be a handful for someone without experience. You need to run enough varnish to keep it from getting contaminated by the other inks but not so much as to cause problems with setoff and sticking together. always remember not to exceed the recomended total ink percentage for the particular stock you are running. Remember that inline varnish adds 100% to your total ink. If there is enough money in the job id suggest that you begin by offline varnishing the job after youve allready printed and allowed the sheet to dry. This will allow you to get a feel for laying down the right amount of varnish. It might be wise to invest in an ink film thickness guage until such time when you can judge just how much varnish your laying down. Once you feel comfortable with offline varnishing you can try an inline job. Be sure your powder is working properly, run the job in small lifts, and air out the sheets a bit after the ink has begun to set. Be extra careful in handling the wet sheets. You need to be gentle with the handling the printed loads. I try to leave the freshly printed load in the delivery until the very last minute. If a feeder load needs to be changed and blankets need to be cleaned allow the freshly printed sheets to remain unmoved in the delivery until the very last minute. This is usually easiest to do on a gloss coated sheet. Satin coated sheets and matte coated sheets require a little more care in handling. Certain smooth surfaced uncoated sheets can be very prone to problems when inline varnishing. Its really not rocket science once you get the hang of it and learn the limits of the process.
