About 8 months ago the chain grippers fell out of timing with the impression cylinder. One of my students readjusted it and it ran fine. The chain recently moved and broke a couple of gripper fingers on the chain and fell out of timing again.

Does anyone know what causes it to slip? Or the correct method of resetting this timing? I feel we are shooting in the dark without knowledge of the factory setting. Even though we have another 2800xl that runs without a hitch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can look at the NOP (non operator side) side chain sprocket by the imp cylinder and see if it has 3 small allen screws in it. If it does this will give you some in/out adjustment on the gripper bar timing. You loosen all 3 allens with the last one having the gripper bar at the imp cyl grippers. Turn the handhweel and you'll see the imp cyl move up/down. If the gripper bar is too close back it off a hair, tighten the screws and feed a few sheets. Might take a few tries before you get it's sweet spot. Feed a few weights of stock to be sure all is well and should be on your way. Sounds like the screws might have backed out loose and were not tightened properly when last adjusted. Or someone had a big jam and tweaked something. It's also possible if the bars are not parallel to the imp cyl grippers the shear pin on the OP (operator side) side chain sprocket gear broke and needs to be replaced. You'll be able to rock the chain del gripper bars forward and backward on the OP side if so. Both are simple fixes for the most part.

  • We followed your instructions and tweeked the three allen screws. That did the trick!
It's running like a sewing machine!

Your shared knowledge saved me a ton of aggrevation.

    Thanks again for your input!:D
