Feeder tapes will not engage after feeder is turned on. Replaced the solenoid, It helped a little, maybe. After turning the feeder off and on about three times the tapes engage and continue to work for a few hours, but then, say after finishing a run and you go to start up the feeder, it comes on and the tapes don't engage until a couple of more tries. But that new solenoid really shakes the frame.

Once they engage and you start feeding Sheets does it feed ok? as in you dont need to try and feed a few ties before itll work?

  • Did you replace the feeder clutch?
How does the clutch look as some one else asked does it engage in the correct position every time or does it skip then catch and engage causing a timing issue with the first sheets
Have you tried the hand wheel does it feel smooth with that?

Yup.. Figured it out today. The solenoid inside the gear side frame was also shot. Took awhile to realize it. i've never replaced that one before. Actually the part will arrive in the am. With a little help from a friend, we took the frame off and used a wire coat hanger through the frame to pull up on the solenoid to engage tapes, just to keep up production ya know. Thank you Rolandman. I will definately be coming back here. Great sight! BTW, what do you think would cause both solenoids to cook at the same time. The brass "rectangles" around the magnets were knocked loose.

It was the solenoid that engages the clutch. Thanks Kmoimt. Where were ya'll last night, man. I needed you guys.

Check the incoming press voltage. Burning of solenoids is often a symptom of excess voltage. Three phase voltage should be between 210 and 230 phase to phase.

  • klecman, that sounds deep. is that something a layman can do? Or should an electrician come do that? Company have been contiplating about getting a new 40 perfector for a couple of years, but there's not enough electricity supplied to the building. New cutter in the bindery, but that was a while back. No other press's have been fried yet. New solenoid came in today. Safe to put it in?

Not hard to measure. You have 3 heavy lines coming into the press X, Y, Z or R, S, T. They may not be labeled but that doesn't matter. Set your voltmeter to "AC volts (~). At the main cutoff switch measure from X to Y, X to Z, and Y to Z. All three readings should be between 210 and 230 volts. If the voltage on any pair is out of this range, call an electrician who can change the taps on the main transformer that feeds the press. I would do this before installing the new solenoid.

Having two damaged solenoids and the fact that you say that one shakes the frame does suggest that the voltage is high. Also, when installing the new solenoid, make sure the frame is positioned so that the sliding armature moves smoothly without binding.
