4 colors or 8 colors?

we do lots of catalogs 4/4c, should i buy extra 2 of 4c machine OR 1 of 8c machine with perfecting and Cutstar (Heidelberg)?

how long/short are you jobs ?
what kind of stock do you use (Max) for your jobs ?
what is the ink coverage ?

and last , what is your budget ?

an 8 color perfector is not good for all stocks , not for very high coverage , and if you take a Heidelberg , short jobs will be a problem due to setup time.

Answer the questions and i will give you the right direction to take

Well if the jobs are long - this points to an 8 color press
80-120 GSM - this is fine for the same 8 color press
80% coverage ? that is alittle high but still possible.

I would look in to a Komori LS840P / 2004-2005
I this this will be the best suitable press for you

get the 8,in the long run of things with a good operator it's a win win situation. Just remember the machine is only as good as the operator !

4 color might be a better choice. An 8-color has the disadvantage of higher ink consumption and lower speed.

Have you ever run an 8-c ? Ink consumption has nothing to do with how many units the machine has. I t does however have alittle to do with how the operator runs the press with the a good ink/water balance. But the biggest factor is the image that you PRINT !
How a company can make a profit is greatly increased when you do work in one pass as compared at two passes. But if the operator is just some lazy, don't care operator it won't make a difference what press, it just the 8-c has a bigger bite! I like running the 8-c, but I like running all presses.

Oh, one more thing. The 8-c does 13,000 at straight printing, with a average of 10,400 to 12,500 pendending on the gutter in perfecting, no issues!

Currently our company runs a 10 colour. (used to be 8, perf 4/4) At times coverage becomes a problem and on certain stocks it's easy to get scratch marks. With the 10 colour press, we do 4+var/4+var.

As long as the math works and you are running 8 colors, I really can't see an advantage to two 4 colors. My vote is for the 8.

The digital Hexachrome printing process uses CMYK inks plus Orange and Green inks. With Hexachrome you have a wider color gamut and it may produce better, more vibrant images than 4C alone.

Since you're printing catalogues, it would be best to use 8c. It does not only print better images, it also gives you more creative flexibility.
