I've looked around a bit on this forum looking at discussions pertaining to wages and wanted to throw in my situation for advice from you all. I am currently running a 2003 6 color L28 perfector with coater and have been doing so for about 2.5 months. I have 17 years experience and am running this machine solo with no helper/feeder operator. What do you think compensation should be like in a situation like this? BTW- I'm in the SE U.S. Any advice or comment is much appreciated.
It all depends on the work load, amount of competition, benefits too. I only work at a small shop 3 of us here but there is two other shops in town we do about half of all the printing in town so I receive $15/hr plus benefits and tons of flexibility. I could move 50 miles to a larger city and make $22/hr starting this is in WI tho so yours may differ, also I only have 5 years in the print game
What kind of equipment are you operating, ziggy? To put it another way- How many shops out there are running one guy on half format presses with more than four colors? Shouldn't there be a difference in pay for running solo on what is, or what traditionally has been a two person machine?
I'm running smaller presses ryobi 3302,3200. You should get a little premium for running a two man machine alone especially if your turn work out just as fast. Most shops that size around here don't like having two guys cuz the feed operator wouldnt get paid much and would always be changing people so they pay a little extra to the guy who saves them a lot in the long run avoiding training someone new every few weeks
mate, I get about $25 /hr usd here in Australia which I think is about 20% less than I should be paid. I run a lithrone 5/28 2004 model and do everything myself on the press. I have 25 years experience and still learning. cheers jet screamer
In my opinion in USA salary does not change the past 10 years.Normally if you work without assistant -you get extra money..
I don't know how well that'd go over, spike, but it certainly feels like that kinda money would be right. I always feel like there's so much pressure on getting this stuff done and done right. Like if I **** up one job it's the end of the world. Maybe that's a combination of pressure and my desire to get it perfect, but... hell, the combination makes it worth that money I think. Luckily I haven't burnt anything and I've actually been getting compliments, so who knows. Maybe soon, here, I can talk my way to a decent raise. Another thing is that I've been running an Igen (hence my handle) for the past 6 years and can repair the damn thing better and quicker than our service techs can. I still take time off the Komori to go over and repair the thing- saving the company hours, hell, days sometimes, of downtime. And I still troubleshoot some of our bindery equipment from time to time. In my opinion in USA salary does not change the past 10 years. In my experience this is true so far. I ran a 4 color GTO-52P 10 years ago and made a whole dollar more an hour than I make now running a L28P-6 SOLO. I haven't talked to them about money yet, so let's hope I can break this 10 year stagnant pay business....
Thanks for your input. It seems to me that 25 usd would be reasonable to me doing what I'm doing. I can see someone of your experience making a bit more as well.
In the United State most shops range from 18HR to 26HR. I feel the wage is going to climb in about a year because of lack of quality pressman avail. most pressman are getting out of the trade ____________ Just Press Print http://www.justpressprint.net/contact.asp
I would say 25% goes to uncle Sam. It's not easy! ____________ Just Press Print http://www.justpressprint.net/contact.asp
I sure hope it goes up. Our shop has been unable to acquire a good second shift pressman so all this running is left up to me. I'm running about 60 hours a week now. Luckily I'm getting a helper on monday! Hooray! Hopefully things will work out and he'll stick around for a while and our production will go up.
I worked on 4 color LS40(without helper)earning good money.everything is good but the delay salary(3 month) In USA this posible?
As an owner, I'm not even sure why I want to get into this discussion. Being an operator prior to ownership makes me torn on this subject. $18 - $25 is the norm in Canada for small offset. If the employee is a press operator/mechanic/bindery operator/reciever/shipper.... like most shops, they deserve more for sure. It also depends on mistakes! How much is the owner throwing out due to operator error? Bottom line, you should be paid according to your value to the company. I left a 3 person shop as an operator making $30 an hour on a GTO single color (2002).... the boss never once complained about giving me raises and he was cheap
Check the industry wage in your area. Consider the skill needed and the load of work you would assign to your employee. You should also pay attention to minimum wage in your area.
the minimum wage in Russia 200 $ printer has a salary ten times more.. from the Philippines, many leaving to work in Saudi Arabia,UAE?
