Voltage converter question...

I've got a Canon IR7095. I just closed down my offices but still need to use this copier. It's a big machine for putting in my garage, but I have no other choice. My garage is insulated and climate controlled... but only has 110 volt (20 amp breaker). I've been looking at some high quality voltage converters (110 to 220 and 220 to 110), cranking out up to 5,000 watts. Will this work for my copier? And will it harm the machine at all, or is it pretty safe to go this route?

Thanks for the help!

Hi. Watt = Volt x Amp. Check how many amp your machine wants to pull. It should be safe to use a transformer but most likely would be cheaper to find a friend - electrician and have him fix the 220 outlet, i mean the transformer will not come free anyway. As far as I know, many private residences have 2 separate lines of 110 coming in and that could be fixed in to appropriate 220V outlet. Anyway 5000 Watts / 220V output should hold a 22 amp load, check the specs of the copier if it is within 1 Amp - should work.

  • I am not an electrician but have done electrical work. I think you will be pulling way too much juice out of that 20 amp circuit, keep in mind you will need 40 amps at 110 to go to 20 amps 220. Most newer fuse boxes have enough to pull two 110 circuits (equalling 220) for your machine. As long as we are talking about single phase (which you probably have) not 3 phase.

thanks for the responses... i will probably just have an electrician come out and hard wire everything... just to be safe. it's an awfully expensive machine to risk it.
