UV coating or Lay-flat film

I'm getting quotes on a project that's bigger than what I can run in-house.
I thought I would have the covers uv coated, but I have an interesting quote that has gloss lay-flat film specified instead of gloss uv.

Any thoughts on how lay-flat film covers compare with uv covers? Is there any down-side I should consider?

I know this is late but I figured I would put my two cents in. 1 I would say lay flat gloss or matte looks better than uv coatings. 2 They make layflat in a digital film which makes it adhere better to digital prints. 3 lamination prevents the ink from cracking when being converted.

  • Jeff,

The previous post brought up some good points but you missed a huge one...Cost! Lay flat coatings are much more expensive than the .16 cents a sheet price that UV coating offers. Also there is a much greater variety of options with UV coating fluids which includes soft touch, matte, gloss, and satin finishes all for half the price of lamination. I would assume to say the only downside to UV coating would be the durability factor. If you want these covers to last a few years then lamination is your option but if these are one time only pieces or mailing pieces I'd say UV coating is a no brainer

That's sheet size up to 20 x 24 and a quantity of 200. That is current retail pricing on UV coated pieces...5 gallon bucket of UV coating fluid at $270 will coat approximately 11,000 - 13,500 sheets
