OK been using Toyo Hy Unity soy inks for a good few months now and have come across a problem that perhaps some techie can shed a light on.

    Stock: 300gm gloss coated art
Inks: Toyo Hy Unity process set
Fount + additive: 8% IPA and 5% fountain additive
Press: Komori with IVT IR dryer
Problem: Very low rub resistance, brochures have scuffed in transit. Admittedly they weren't tightly packed (print finishers had staggered them to avoid excess pressure on the spines precisely to avoid scuffing. Examining the job and physically scuffing one page against another produces highly visible scuffing...examining last year's printing shows the same (the ink affected is cyan and yellow mainly)

Product is a 6pp cover + 16pp text all four colour process. Saddle stitched and perfed on the throwout page.

The question is ... has anyone else experienced low rub resistance with this set?

Not got an answer for you on this Richard but, seeing your other posts i see you seem to like this set, and at the minute we ae actually between ink suppliers, as one of the local Suppliers went under recently, where you buying this set from? what you paying for it?

    Thanks

Humidity, temp, paper, too much fount, too much IPA, plenty of areas here that might influence poor drying and rub resistance.
A quick lick of varnish might be the answer for future runs of this job?

Sorry RichardK just realized your running the real stuff, not sure if it would have the same affect? I stoped using alcohol in the 80's, but when I did only 2-3% , we have to deal with the enviroment police.

Could you list the fountain solution you are running, also list the chemical make up & % from the MSDS.
There are many many founts out there that are high in glycols and glycerin.. These two chemicals can cause slow drying, and or attribute to scuffing issues.

If you are running IPA at 8% and the fount your using is high in either of the two products listed above, you can expect to have issues, as the solvency will effect the body, tack & drying capabilities of the ink.

Trust that you checked that your PH and Conductivity was within range?

I ran the hy unity for a moment,, and have stopped using it. Never experienced scuffing or drying issues, but would not rate it as a high quality ink set.
