Switching between board printing and art paper printing

Dear All,

I am in the market for a 4 colour Heidelberg SM 102V or Komori 440

I wish to print art paper ranging from 70 GSM to 350 GSM and at times (3 months in the year) Duplex Paper or Board of 400 GSM to 600 GSM.

I hear conflicting reports that a Heidelberg is not suitable for this kind of Board printing as it will affect quality printing on lower GSM paper. Some say a Komori may be better.

Any opinions please?

THe SM Classic design is somewhat limited to around .016 - .020. Marking will be an issue after that for sure. The Heidelberg CD design will handle anythng up to .040. Same with a so equipped Komori, .040. MAN Roalnd , .040. KBA - .048. The KBA is the only one that will run thin paper up thru heavy material without and changes to the gripper setting but all will do a fine job.

Thanks for the advise. Could you please clarify a bit by converting the 0.40 etc into GSM? Here in India we swear by GSM.

My point was that i plan to primarily use thin art paper but when needed run heavy paper/ board also. Will this affect the quality of registration when I return to thin paper jobs?

This should get you close. As long as the required gripper setting adjustments are made, there should be no problem with print quality. It is possible that the cylinder gear mesh will alter the print quality somewhat.

It depends on how much you want to invest, a CD102 would be a better option then SM102.

The CD would be required for your use. The Komori should be able to handle the thicker stock with fewer issues. Just makesu re any machine you are considering is capable of thicker material and is so equipped.
