SM 74 2 Col perfector Help a young 22 year old few questions :)

Hey everyone First time on our SM-74 2 perfector at my dads company in a week or to getting installed this week.

No ones ran a perfector before so can't turn to the experienced lads for help on it.

its a 1997 Heidelberg SM74 Perfector

few questions

Anything to watch out for when perfecting compared to straight printing.

Or any issues or pitfalls you have come across on this press

How fast are you all printing on them while in perfect mode will be mainly printing on 80 GSM Bond just to get a gauge of what she's capable of comfortably


The Press has got laser cut ducts noticed some scoring when we went to view it on the duct roller guess this may cause some problems with washing up etc? anyone know whats the best way to fix it replacement exchange?

Hi tom on sm74 that sort of age speed wise your probably looking around 9000sph if the machine is just about to be installed make sure they run test it in perfect and that you are happy with it.. we are based in Manchester so if you need any advise or any help all our info is on our website

If you have a warranty with the press and it is causing issues then speak to your press supplier, that would be your first cause of action.

Thanks for the coments lads no problems at all the install is going sweet up to now.just never.ran a.perfect so is.interesting if there is anything percific to perfecting that ive got.to be aware of only just starting my.printing career so still gaining lots of experience daily

if its a 97 perfector it will be more likely to semi auto which means it a piece of cake to change over and back like I said before just make sure your supplier runs it in and out of perfect before the end of your demo because the amount of dogey perfectors I have seen 2nd dealers supply and leave like that would scare you print test it in perfect as well

Just think yourself lucky you dont have to switch a GTO in and out of Perfect, that used to get my arse twitching

try to run your heavier covrage last when perfecting and make sure the perfecting unit get a little more tlc
keep it clean and lubed and it will serve you well also write down the perfecting changeover procedure and keep it
near the console good luck

thanks everyone really really appreciate it been studying the switchover sequence and coppied the sheet outta the manual


got all the rollers out and been cleaning all the transfers and the other cylinders all weekend really coming along now going to start on the perfect unit, and pincer bars really need a clean in the morning cant wait to take a pull later in the week

used to love the gto we had when I was a kid brings back fond memories stripping laser cut ducts haha

as mentioned before you do want to try and run your heavier coverage on the later units. When it comes to inks id suggest strongly pigmented inks to minimize piling on subsequent impression cylinders. You also want to make sure that your delivery is fully operational when it comes to air support on the down side of the sheet to avoid marking. It should be noted that the delivery slowdown wheels on a perfector can blow air as well as suction. Position of these wheels are critical to not marking the underside. If your purchase includes a warrantee try and put the perfector feature through its paces as often as possible in an effort to see just what kind of shape your pincer bars are in due to the fact they have a tendency to wear and cause registration problems front to back particularly, when pushing the press towards it upper limits of speed.

You'll have to make sure your prepress dept. leaves an adequate amount of space for slowdown wheels. Keep slowdown wheel areas clear of colour bars. Also, you need to have enough room for gripper margins on both ends of the sheet. If colour bars are used before the perfector and they are only a few mm's from the tail edge of the sheet, when the sheet turns over those colour bars will end up in your grippers and mess up your gripper pads. Get enough tacky ink in your delivery bar grippers and sheets may not release properly.

when we first ran our cd 74 on coated paper in perfect mode the sheet would not release,we quickly realized that you cannot have colour bars on, as these come into the grip on the back side and will stick so we now run no colour bars.we even use our perfector if we have a long long run to turn the sheets over as its a 1 back 4 so if we do say a million leafets then our printers will wash up and slide all colours down press so they dont have to turn all the pile over,seems to work well for the sake of an extra set of plates.
