Roller coater vs. Anilox

We are close to purchasing a beautiful used (2005) SM52-6-LX. Only sticky point is that is has the roller-type coater and not the anilox.

We'd like to do the cool coatings (soft touch, pearl, etc.). Can we do these fancy coatings with the roller-coater, or is the anilox needed to do a good job?

thanks,
Robb

Anilox is a must for special effects. Harris and Bruno I believe has a retrofit.

  • You can do many effect coatings with roller coater, but you will get much better results with anilox, As AKJ said, you can do a retrofit.

Here is my take on the question:
The main advantage of an anilox coater is that there is no way to change the amount of coating being applied. The main disadvantage is that there is no way to change to amount of coating being applied.
Consistency of gloss and rub are the results of the lack of adjustability on an anilox coater.
A roll coater can be adjusted to apply more or less coating film depending on requirements. This adjustability may be required in order to run a variety of types of coating.
Purchasing and changing out anilox rollers would be required to alter the coating film. This is expensive and time consuming.
I wouldn't let the coater design be a determining factor. If it doesn't meet your needs, you can retrofit an anilox system later.
