Could it be a pinch guard near the blanket cyl?

What kind of machine is it? It could be the missing sheet detector. If it's a 102 you must go under the machine and clean the sensor and make sure the switching plate moves freely. If the machine thinks it sees a sheet there it will not let you run the feeder.

Yeah, you might need to tie the senser flap in position with cable ties or elastic bands if the error keeps coming up and it's not dropping sheets.

Agreed, if your going to go through the effort of putting on zip ties, or rubber bands, you may as well go through the slightly more work of doing it correctly. Zip ties and rubber bands in the perfector, definitly bad idea.

Believe it or not. This is what heidelberg engineers did to repair it. Every now and then, the bands will break so we just put new ones on. The company has a service contract with heidelberg, but they just seem to do bodge jobs instead of repair things. These engineer are actually from the company, not freelance ones. Not quite as good as the engineers I used to use back in the UK :(

The problem is due to failure or dirt build up on the perfector missing sheet sensor. This can be verified by making a visual check of the sensor.the position(design error) of the sensor means it is suseptable to dirt ingress/build up by ink/oil/paper dust/etc.
The best solution is to clean off the build up with an agressive solvent(tryclorethelene based preferably,if not readily available paint stripper will do) and a stiff wire brush applied directly to the sensor emitter lens.As the receiver works on the tried and tested ultrasonic principle, activation of the unit engaged inductive proximity sensor at 304 degrees is not required

wow ...... so that's the difference between a Heidelberg NZ 'engineer' and a Heidelberg UK engineer, no wonder there are no Heidelberg NZ engineers in the UK !!

If the mechanic the taped this sensor back was a Heidelberg mechanic, chances are he will not be working for Heidelberg much longer. While this sensor is very sensitive and tricky to set, it still can be done. This sensor is actually a saftey for the press. If you have dropped sheets in the perfector it will never be detected without this switch. You will find out sooner or later that it has been dropping sheets when the pile under the perfector gets high enough and a good bunch of sheets gets picked up and thrown up into your cylinders. When this happens you are going to wish you had this fixed correctly. The newer SM52 have a light barrier under the press to detect this, but the older ones, like yours, has a sniffer piston. If I was you I would get it fixed properly.
