I am a budding amateur photographer, brand new to making my own prints and selling my photos. I have a Canon Pixma Pro 9000, and I am trying to figure out the cost of the ink so I can price my prints. Is there a formula that I can use or can anyone tell me the approximate cost of printing with this printer?

I appreciate any help I can get!

If you know how much a cartridge yields you can use the following formula:

cartridge cost / cartridge page yield = cost per page

  • The bigger brother IPF5100 and the wide format canons have a printer driver utility that gives you a report of the ml of ink used for each print job.

As far as I know the 9000 and smaller printers don't have such an ink usage report utility though.

Your cost will depend entirely on what you're printing in terms of ink% coverage and to a lesser degree paper type. I would start by guessing a cost of around $3 per 8 x 10 on quality paper. This should give you a decent safety zone.

Also remember to amortize the cost of the printer itself.
