Plate Clamps Basic

Hi guys...i am such a newbie...i just bought a GTOV 1987 with no bacher pins...i have some questions regarding to plate clamps :
a. what is the function of those elements that i have red and blue lines?
b. What is the meaning of "zeroing" ?
c. and mostly, how do i ensure that all the 4 plates are put as alligned (registered) as possible..as i dont have bacher pins

when you say no bacher pins do you mean the little round targets that are cut out on plates or are you referring to the oval punch on the plates gripper? If you have neither of the 2 you could always have prepress image "hang marks" on the plates edges close to the gripper and then very carefully scribe corresponding marks on plate cylinder.

yeo, i dont have the bacher "round" pins...maybe i have the half round one...the half round ones...what will they reperesent?? horizontal cenetering??for the vertical ones...i ll carefully scribe on the bearers...thx turbottom>>

Question, how do you make the plates, with negs or do you have a ctp device? Do not scribe the "bearers". It's not the end of the world if you don't have pins or bullets holes, you make a centre mark on the plate with however you image the plate and make a mark on the clamp for positioning. And your second point of regsister is the lead edge of the plate, it sits all the way in the clamp and tht where you start. After that it all up to the operator, when the operator get good at plate moves the image can be in fit with three moves.

Thx for your reply...i make my plate with ctp device....so if i sit the plate all the way down...it ll guarantee that the plate is straight horizontally??thx for your reply

if you push the plate all the way into the plate clamp gripper edge the plate will be square ONLY if your gripper plate clamp is square. Dont know about the GTO but on the speedmasters there are adjustable stops on both sides of the gripper clamp. Once stops are squared off all you need to do is back off gripper clamp till it hits the stop on both sides then you will be hanging your plate into square clamps. When i suggested scribing a witness mark i never said to scribe the plate bearers. I was suggesting more in the gutter of plate cylinder right next to the bearers. This would be a way to hang plates square in the event that you did not have adjustable stops on the gripper clamp.

Plate clamps can be either horizontal or vertical. These horizontal and vertical clamps are used to lift and transfer materials during rigging applications. Whether you will use a horizontal or vertical clamp depends mainly on the type of materials being transferred.

I don't see much difference myself.. but I am going to look for you and see if I can't find a better resource for information.
