On our Komori lithrone 626 we are getting severe gear marking from the damping units on units 2-4 have replaced the nylon gears on the 'V' damper but no change and also have increased and decreased the nip pressure, I am thinking about removing the gears altogether but this we lead to other problems like hickeys ect. or/and maybe trying different fount, any ideas will be appreciated.

hi assuming that all your dampening and inkers are set correctly, try advancing your oscillation by 200 degrees.

  • Have you measured the diameter of the rollers maybe they have shrunk and are allowing the gears to mesh to much,Is there any lash when the gears are engaged.Whats the durometer of the rollers, how old are they? Are they making a noise during running condition?

are you sure its gear marking and not just roller shock marks ??

Have you pulled dry solids to make sure it's not the inkers? You only need one or two out of spec or badly set to provoke roller/shock marks.

I don't advocate removing the gearing as you can get even more issues.

Our 626 runs really clean solids, occasionally we get roller marks but it's almost always down to shrinkage or settings. FYI we run 2in1 fount (no additional IPA or other additives) and use Toyo Unity inks.

thanks all for your comments, sorry for my slow response been away on holiday. Anyway on the press they are all brand new rollers-inkers and dampers. Have pulled dry solids and there is not a roller mark in sight so this isolates that it is a damper problem and it is a gear pattern as it seems to match the pattern of the gear on the"V" roller also tried without the mckinley... still there

  • Welcome back ;)
I'm going to assume you've got the correct stripe to plate and steel, so are the gears meshing too hard ie can you hear a rattle at all?
If so perhaps the diameter is under spec, have you checked? It wouldn't be unheard of for this discrepancy to occur.
Any chance of a pic of the issue?

In your Operation manual you can find the specs for the roller dimensions you should check the roller circumference and make sure it is made to spec.If they are good re-check your stripes to the chrome roller and then to the plate,If they are good take the water form roller from a good unit and try it in the bad unit.
Did you have this problem before you changed the rollers? Are both gears locked onto the shafts tight? Did you buy the white plastic gears from Komori?
