Difference Between a Polar 92 EM and Polar 92 EMC

Hi all,

I am new to Polar guillotine machine and I need your help to understand what is the difference between a Polar 92 EM and Polar 92 EMC (with or without the monitor).

Your reply will be of great help to me.

Hi Eddie,
The first difference is the name,
EM-Eltromat Memory
EMC-Eltromat Microcomputer

Secondly, the real difference,
EMC is the fully loaded version of the series. It has all the functions of the corresponding machine generation is designed to. You can clearly identify it just by looking at the keyboard. (For example, In EMC-MON, you have hell lot of functions on the buttons of the keyboard (apart from the alpha keys) but on EM keyboard, most of the buttons are have only the letters.

Some EMs doesn't carry the fully automatic knife, but all the EMCs have it.

So, all in all, all the EMs have clamping, cutting, automatic backgauge functions. And very little additional functions. But EMCs have EM + lot of additional functions.

Since the EMC featured more functions then the EM version. Are the additional functions important to a newbie and will it be more difficult/expensive to maintain the EMC as compared to the EM version?

If the price is not much difference, you go for EMC, but I'm sure you will not use even a half of it's additional functions in day-to-day work cycle. Some are bit complicated to use and need a bit of training and practice (for example, repeat cut, etc..). But since they are only computer functions, (not physical tings) they need absolutely zero maintenance. The maintenance procedure for all the polar cutters are almost the same. So you don't have to worry about it.

I really appreciate your advice on this.

When evaluating a used polar machine, what are the areas/parts that need to be careful with? Because for a 1990s machine that is almost 25 years old, I am sure some of the parts might need to be replaced or serviced.

Most of the polar cutters here in sri lanka is belongs to this generation. So I have worked on lots of them.

The one of the most important part (heart) of this machine is the linear scale. (We call it LMS) there are 2 rubber beadings which seals the opening of the scale. If the previous owner hadn't change it, it should be gone by now. Check it and replace if necessary, if the beadings are broken, then you should clean it before replacing the new beadings. ( note that, This is the most delicate part in the machine. So cleaning should be done by a professional. )

Other than that, There are no parts which needs special attention. But better you check the previous owner had changed the Hydraulic oil on time and cleaned the filter. If not, you should do it before you put the machine to work. And lubricate all the points. The chart is on the back of the frame. Every moving part needs some kind of lubrication. Apart from the lubrication points, you check the other moving parts too, such as safety bolt, hinges on the foot peddle, etc...
The electronic parts need no special attention. But it's better you can clean the card rack by blowing dry air. And some 7 segment displays might not work correctly. If that's the case, you have to replace them.

If the machine is working fine, no other things to check.

At my wife's family business they have a Polar 92 EM that the monochrome monitor has decided to die. Has anyone been successful in adapting an LCD to the unit?

Sorry to be so late in responding to your post. Our company in FL has repaired the monochrome CRT monitors used in many Polar cutters for over 25 years. The problem with replacing these monitors with either a NTSC-based CRT or LCD monitor is the unique video signal that the Polar uses. The image will be incorrectly sized and/or incorrectly centered when trying to use these monitors. We have developed a drop-in LCD replacement monitor for those shops insisting on moving to an LCD-type screen. However, 95% of our Polar CRT customers elect to stay with our refurbished CRT units.
