Calibration of Printer and RIP?

Watching the Fiery University videos on Color Profiler Suite, they keep mentioning that you need to have both your RIP and your printer calibrated before profiling. I have always just used the calibration in Command Workstation, is there a printer calibration that I should also be doing? It doesn't seem like you would need to do this twice and the way the tech explained it to me you only need to calibrate with the 34 patches from Command Workstation using the ES-2000.

Yes on your services home screen on the right it should say calibration or auto grad. these are necessary to ensure that your printer's devs and drums are performing at their best.
