Installing the software is quite simple, its done through the Centerware Services. Type in the IP address of the printer on a cpu that's on the network. Then look for the Xerox logo in the bottom right.
Lots of questions you should be asking. Most of these are sold through a Broker, they never see it before or after the sale. So they typically are taking someone else word for its condition.
I sell them and have 2 on my floor now, both are Xerox inspected and are ready to be put on contract...

The cable is a USB/ male to USB/ male, I have used one from the computer store with success in the past.
Is this a machine you have had for a long time or did you just buy it? And is it host-to-host USB or Firewire? Last what is the software version on the UI?
Have you checked your power in the building? Make sure you are within the recommended power by Xerox. It may be the K BIAS PWB is supplying too much voltage to the K Drum.
That's a steep upgrade.. They are nice presses but it may be more than you need. Do you run a lot of heavy paper? The one distinct advantage it the belt fuser, it wont curl thicker paper like a 560 or a 700 would.
The last thing I would do is change the Dev units.. $$$
Try cleaning the ROS windows, they get toner on them if you don't keep the inside of the unit clean, and sometimes in high humidity they fog up or simply get dusty....

Are you running LEF? I think (I'm a Xerox Tech) you have different issues on the individual colors. The M is in the process direction, and having been in storage for some time I bet you have a toner issue. The K is not in the process direction meaning its a roll somewhere along the line and it...
