We are having a problem with the speed jumping around, and the counter freezing/stopping for 2 or 3 sheets and then continuing on and off throughout the run just started in the last few days.

Hi , what Komori Model do you have ??
the counter is electrical or electronic??
However you can try with contact cleaner contacts inside of counter, and look
for wires loose, bad contacts, or corroded wires.
Of course possibility of mechanical adjustment with Cam and microswitch for Counter, or defective counter inside coil. Overheating !!

  • A 1998 L-428, electronic counter I think the press has a Varicam that controls the speed indicator and the counter whenever the speed goes out for a few seconds the counter stops for 2 or 3 and then back to normal for 50 to 200 and then the speed goes crazy for a few more seconds then back to normal. This just started maybe 3 or 4 days ago.

Hi i dont understand.. do you mean the machine jerking while running? What kind of mail drive in the machine? how about the speed indicator?

No the problem is electronic, the counter stops for 2 or 3 sheets and speed indicator jumps around and even shows blank the back to the speed the press is going, The mechanical part is fine. At the same time the Varicam in the control panel at feeder goes blank for a second or two then back to normal.
I'm trying to see where the degree wheel is so I can see if the pickup for the position of the press is not the problem
    Thanks

Hi sir since your counter is electronic:
please review this steps .contact cleaner contacts inside of counter, and look

It looks there is some problem with the control circuit supply.. observe the control voltage... P24A - N24

Automotive tool companies make degree wheels in various diameters. If you having a problem with your electronics you could always slap on an automotive degree wheel and pointer for a few bucks to verify timing events.

I guess I thought that the press already has one on it and I wanted to locate it and make sure it or the sensor for the timing is not the problem, like a piece of trash or something like that.
But thank you for that information.

I did check the power at the delivery panel at the speed indicator/display only fluctuating .05 volts 24.04 to 24.09 something like that.

This is normally caused by the Varicam or the absocoder failing. If the Varicam display goes blank, replace it. If the absocoder is hard to turn, replace it. My money is on the Varicam, they are a high failure item.

What and where is the absocoder?
The vericam display does go blank for a couple of seconds and then returns to normal, whenever it goes blank the speed and counter mess up.

    What is the problem sir??

    Let me know, sincerely

    Blessing

You have problem with inbuilt SMPS of Varicam.
It seems like it's droping negtive 12 volts supply or positive 5 volts.

Open the Varicam Box. Check with a good multimeter.
From right to left On Main Board connector
    1-Negtive Common
    2- +5v
    3- -12v
    4- Negtive common
    5- +12v
*Please check again. It's according to my experience.

  • Hi
I suspect the Varicam small inverter 200V to 5V power supply is failing you can connect an external power supply there is also a 12V inverter which has a 10uF capacitor which fails much cheaper than replacing the Varicam.

What I was trying to convey to you was that if you suspect the electronic onboard degree sensor was defective you could verify its accuracy with an automotive degree wheel. Various timing events could be verified by comparing your electronic degree reading to a mechanical wheel. The mechanical degree wheel will never lie to you or be inaccurate.
