My current Color laser printer is my only color laser printer and has been hobbled for about a week, killing my profits. I started looking around for a decent, used color laser to become my primary (and move my faulty Xerox DC242 down to be my backup printer). I need another color laser in here ASAP but I'm not going to rush a major purchase. Leasing a machine is out of the question.

One of my local sales/service suppliers has a decent-looking Canon iRC 5255. It comes with a high capacity feeder, 4 paper trays and finisher/stapler (not a booklet finisher). Sales guy says it's 3-4 years old and has:
  • 854,000 B/W clicks
  • 128,000 Color clicks
I'm having a lot of trepidation about pulling the trigger on this purchase. They're asking $5525.00 for the machine, delivery, setup, installation and connectivity.

Is this a good deal? Should I be asking more questions?

What are your expectations -- what will you be printing with it?

I'd ask for a demo or print samples from the machine being sold.

If you can supply your own print test file, use some files that represent what you print every day. The RIP's internal test page usually looks great even when defects show up on my real work... defects may show up in lighter shades or solids where the machine's internal test page is more vibrant and doesn't have large solid areas that show issues.

Also add up supply and parts costs.
