Production Scheduling

Just looking for some input on how your shops monitor jobs in production. We are trying/wanting to go a real time system and also use it for daily scheduling. We are currently using a software package call Professional Management for entering orders. It also gives us the ability to view jobs scheduled for each individual piece of equipment or department. The problem is that it is that we are unable to change the job status of a job like "Out on Proof". The job just sits their, even if it goes beyond the original due date. Some departments don't even want to use it, they just keep writing everything down. The one thing that I like is that we are able to view the weekly schedule for each department on a number of computers within the shop. So, how is everybody else doing it. I would love some suggestions.
