Hey Folks,
Recently our company purchased 2 iGens and some of the work they are doing on them requires replication of point of sale signs that we print on sheetfed presses. They have not been able to match our color and are looking for answers why. My guess is the ICC color profile doesnt match ours. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

One large factor that I've noticed make a difference is the order of colors: KCYM on the iGen as opposed to YMCK on a conventional printer. The black being on the bottom layer changes a lot in appearance, and therefore requires some consideration, and possibly a visit by a color specialist to provide solutions. (ie Rich Black is converted to 100% K only to produce your best looking black.)

The color specialists I've worked with have given me a good amount of insight into how the varied color profile algorithms translate images, spot colors and basic CMYK builds. You're head will hurt for a week, but its worth it to keep the business volume.

I'd guess some peripheral issues to consider are also "dot gain" & "ink vs toner" comparisons.

Hope this keeps you on the road to your solution.
Happy printing!

PS - What DFI are you using? I operate an EFI Fiery front end, which has a different set of ICC profiles itself.

I have been a conventional press operator doing large format process work the better part of 25 plus yrs but now that I'm back in the duplicators format. I think you can not replicat offset to toner or vice versa 100 % and trust me working for someone convinced you can will drive you up the wall! It just happened again a couple of weeks ago when one of my new clients printing materials where done dig and to be honest with them the first thing I told the client is the look will not be the same, I am not going to waste my time not being able to do the nearly impossible and regret it I just accept it.

Just an old school point of view

We use the FreeFlow v7 and also use the same Gracol icc. They do not match because dry toner isn't ink and ink isn't dry toner.

I put my money on the iGen for accurate color in most cases.
