Hello forum,

I am writing from Sudan. I need a used printing press capable of printing newspapers, magazines, textbooks, posters, etc. Which one between Speedmaster and GTO can perform this job and why?

If you have a used GTO or Speedmaster, please send me your quotation and state whether your price includes some or all of the postpress/prepress equipment. My budget is tight so I need to know how much the transport would cost from wherever you are to sudan.

I currently am operating a SM102 12 colour Perfector capable of running off a roll and cut sheets. This press has the ability to run up to 12pt board(it can run heavier weight board but it is a long process changing packings in transfers). We have run 38lb coated gloss(off a roll) perfecting at 12,000 sph. This press is perfect for magazines, textbooks and posters. With an SM102 perfector you can run 16 pages or more at a time, depending on your book size. A GTO is obviously smaller and therefore cannot run as many pages. I don't know if GTO's are available with 8 units.
The nice thing about running off a roll is the ability to use various cut sizes. You can run a 40" roll with an 18" cut if you wish-saves a lot of paper.
I think newspaper should be left to web printing as they can do folding in line. Have a web shop do your newsprint.

Hope this helps.

You sound like you would need a 1/1 perfector as opposed to a 4-color or a 4/4 perfector. For simple black over black an older Heidelberg like a Heidelberg MOZP http://www.pressmerchant.com/uploadimg/full/27.jpg It is a solid press and is widely available used as the M-line is no longer produced. If you want to cut the costs, buy a pre-1990/91 model. That would eliminate the Alcolor systems and of course any CPtronics but it will save you $10,000 or so. And any pressman worth his salt can work a traditional dampening system with great success. Two water-form rollers per year would be about the only consumable if your pressman does good maintenance an knows how to set and properly maintain rollers. Regardless of what any broker or rebuild company may tell you, start with new rollers and you will have better success from the start. Too many owners neglect roller replacement and it can make even the best pressman look amateurish if regular replacement is scorned due to cost. Like I have told many owners, you shouldn't be surprised if your car doesn't stop in the rain with bald tires. Rollers degrade like all rubber products and need to be maintained or replaced. I think that this advice as well as the press suggestion should serve you well in your endeavour. Best of luck to you.
