ink buildup under duct foils

we have a problem on our 74 with ink building up under all 5 duct foils. Its messy so would appreciate any suggestions.

I should have mentioned the foils are not splitting, will order Heidelberg foils to try.

Would you really sugest to change the ink foils every day.......they are designed to last a little longer !!

Maybe Heidelberg foils COULD last longer than a day, however if one is having a problem with ink building up under or leaking around the foil, absolutly change it everyday. If you are not using a Heidelberg foil it may need to be changed even more often.

Non Heidelberg foils will basically last the same time as genuine Heidelberg ones otherwise i don't believe companies would sell them ......... or they would have a lot of claims .......


Check your ink to make sure it is not too thin, check the duct ends are sealing and make sure you shut the ducts down at night.

I must say Im a bit surprised to hear a Heidelberg guy say that. I think that some companies are willing to give up quality for price. They know that they are buying an inferior product and know that they either have to change their liners more often and dont care that the liners wear out faster. I cant say that it has happened alot, the times I would go into a shop that had issues with several servo motors freezing up because of ink below the liners it would be because of aftermarket liners. And when I made the above statement it was a possible fix. I dont know what kind of ink he is running, how long its being left in the fountains for, I didnt even know he wasnt using Heidelberg foils, its just a possible fix and something to try. If Heidelberg foils leak as well he hopefully will post that and we then can post other possible fixes.

Most aftermarket UK companies tend to try and compete with the original Heidelberg ones for quality and they sell at a cheaper price to try and prise the business away from Heidelberg.

have tried heidelberg foils, still no splits but ink on underside still building up. Am using sun chemical intense set, always do ink shutoff, ink buildup on all 5 foils across entire foil

This might be a dumm question , but are you really sure you are mounting the foils properly?

The mounting plate for the foils have a screw in the centre which allows you to pull the liner tight if needed-I would check that the screw is all the way in (turning counter-clockwise), having it maxed out the other way reduces how much of the liner lip is under the fountain roller. If it is not a Heidelberg liner the lip may be too short. We run 24 hours a day, 5 days a week and liners are in all week.

This might sound silly but are duct membranes properlt fitted ?
As 4 Heidelberg or non heidelberg duct fols i belive the heidelberg ones r longer lasting due the size of the flap on the front.
Try and remmember 2 shut down the keys overnight this also helps keep the ink from oozing out.

What is the machine type and the six-digit serial number? What did you clean and what did you dismandle?

Its usually pretty easy, It would help to know what kind of machine it is on and how far you took it apart. Did you just take the keys and barrels loose, or did you also take off the servos and potentiometers?

no i just took of the keys....machine is speedmaster 102...its pretty old...1985

I believe that is the style with a set screw at the rear of each key, as long as you didnt mess with that all you should need to do is replace the metal key and pull it against the set screw and you should be good. If it is still off then you may need to position each key to 1.2 on the consol, thats the bright red light at the farthest postion to the bottom and the dim red light one notch up and use a .02mm feeler tape to set each key. Or set it by eye with in in the fountain. This can be tricky because you need access to the set screw with a foil and ink in, but it can be done, I do it that way all the time.

The exact location of the set screw is under the tightening device for your foil. You will need to remove the tightening device if you need to adjust these. This is why I am suggesting to first pull each key against the screw and see how your ink profile looks on the roller, you might be ok if these screws were not moved. You can PM me if you need to. no i havent moved those setting screws...i removed threaded cams and the keys...there was too much dried ink in the threads.
