Hi All,
I have a HP Z2100 that has been sat for a while, circa 9 months. It used to have a continuous ink system but i damaged one side of the tanks and left the printer. Unfortunate it has been left with the full right hand set of cartridge slots being empty, i.e. nothing inserted. I wanted to start using it again so have purchased a full set of non genuine cartridges to see if the printer still works.

The printer fires up all fine and the new cartridges have all been installed but i am getting an error on my LM cartridge that says "Ink Cartridge Fault". If i pull it out and reinsert it it beeps but the same message comes back.

I appreciate its a bit of a punt getting it back working hence the cheap cartridges but is there anything anyone can suggest to try and fix this issue, seems like coincidence that the issue appears on one of the slots that has been left empty. Maybe a good clean somehow ? If thats the case what would i clean.

Thanks

  1. Clean the Chips: Even with a new cartridge, oxidized or dusty contacts on the printer side can cause a "Missing" or "Incompatible" error. Use a lint-free cloth and a bit of isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the printer's carriage.
  2. Prime the Tubes: If the machine sat for months, the ink in the tubes might have settled or dried up, creating back-pressure that confuses the sensors. Check if there are air bubbles in the lines.
  3. The "O-Ring" Issue: These older Z-series units often suffer from perished O-rings in the setup/startup process. If the printer can't create a vacuum to pull ink, it will often reject the cartridge.
  4. Firmware: Ensure you are on the latest firmware. Sometimes newer "v2" HP cartridges require a firmware update to be recognized by older boards.
If you’ve already tried a second "known good" cartridge and the error persists, it's likely the Ink Supply Station (ISS) or a failing Printhead that's reporting a false error to the system.

Hope this helps you get back to printing!
