Is there any trick to getting a printer to accept patterned paper or to do multiple passes on a single sheet?

My little ipf670 will let me print on a very light and localized pattern of color without black on its generic "colored coated" setting, but with anything darker/widespread/I-would-like it throws up a "paper jam" error as soon as it comes to the printed part. Then I have to clear the paper and it cancels the job.

I have tried a number of different generic paper settings, and I have tried disabling color management, all without success.

Why is this even happening when I do that? Why doesn't it just dump ink?

The paper specifics don't seem to make a difference. I've tried a Japanese printed paper as well as multiple passes on canon high res (half decent coated bond), several different coated fine art papers, and uncoated watercolor paper (which is what I really want to do multiple passes on).
