Epson Stylus 9900 Ink Selector Removal

Hoping someone has this answer. Looking to repair this printer for a client and I think the ink selector needs a good cleaning. The service manual says the first step is to do an ink discharge, but it looks like this involves having to replace all the ink carts with drain carts, which I don't have. Anyone know if the ink discharging step is fully necessary or can I get away with removing the selector, skipping that step?
