Dot gain vs dot area

Any thought in regard to dot gain vs reading dot area? In the past we have always read dot gain using our X-Rite 518, but after a full calibration and speaking with a tech @ X-Rite, he has indicated that we would have grater consistency reading the dot area. Also, we are considering replacing our (2) 518's with X-Rite 508. Thank you for any input! JG
