DIY Fiery RIP

Good morning Gents, Has anyone in this forum tried building their own RIP? Basically, it's just a PC that is meant to handle image processing, right?

I'm curious about this. I think you also need the interface card and where you take the software?

Interesting idea, I'll give you that. I imagine you could achieve a basic RIP of sorts, but to create a user interface like Command Workstation, or incorporate features that directly feed into the digital press would be a huge challenge. Take for example changing toner dither/dot pattern, image shifting or enhancements, Calibration - Come to think of it, a solid 90% of all EFI's job properties would be difficult to replicate.

Of course, if you don't care about the output, a basic RIP would save you a considerable chunk of change. Just simply use the stand alone print driver.

Are you talking about RIP software or the actual computer? Way back when my delta rip for my Heidelberg died and I took it to my local PC repair shop...he built a new computer and moved the card and whatever else he needed over to the new one and it worked great. That system used a dongle.

Why can’t one get a simple PC and install the EFI command station software? I don’t understand why you must have a stand-alone PC just to run EFI.
