new in digital press, but with experience in offset: We are looking for some updated information (technical and financial) to consider an investment in digital press, either igen, Nexpress or HP Indigo.

Which of those machines has better selling price, ROI, least tech. problems and better performance?

I can only answer from experience, I have ran both Nexpress and Igen4. Im sure improvements have been made to Nexpress over the last 3 yrs..since Ive had one.

Overall, I think the Igen is a better machine for what I do. Lower quality cheap mass mail. Jobs meant for offset, then ran on igen due to paper shortage, or smaller quantities of multiple versions.

in a nutshell, the igen seems built like a tank. Doesnt break catastrophically much, but when it does, it might be a big deal. But also is not very delicate in its approach. vs a Nexpress like a Porsche. Really high tech, does awesome things, great output but can be complicated in doing so. The nexpress was better for for higher end prints, with premium pricing.

I will list all my winners/losers

-up time: Igen hands down
-setup time: Igen
-overall print quality: Nexpress (but you pay for it in ORC's
-cost: not sure. Xerox gets you with clicks, Nexpress got us with parts cost. Fusers, Image cylinders are big $. I "think" igen is cheaper.
-service: Kodak all the way, but we had onsite, for digimasters, they would just walk over and look at it. Xerox it pays to have a rapport with your service tech. I call mine all the time...
-versatility: Igen.
-heavy or textured paper: nexpress. xerox has issues with transfer. always has. The other machines I use do the same too....

Thank you for the options you stated, I appreciate it!. you mention xerox's job as a lower quality output versus Nexpress? in a price range, how much/page A3 or A4 should you charge a client for having it's job done by nexpress versus Xerox?( generally) i.e. brochure, not simply mass mail?
Also which models of Nexpress have you used to compare with IGen 4?

Pricing was not my dept I am afraid. I cant accurately answer for that. Pricing would be based on the click charge you are paying, service contract fee....etc.

To clarify, Igen can do fine quality. Just in my experience, the nexpress (WHEN ON ITS BEST BEHAVIOR) would print better quality high end- High density photos etc. But it would require added maintenance sometimes to do so. A fuser roller would often cause streaks($750), and Image cylinders would often get lines. ($1200) neither of which seem to be an issue with the igen so far Igen has a soft belt not cylinders.

Igen, however, is WAY better on solid colors. WIth only the occasional problem.... if brochures are what you are doing, not photobooks or something, i THINK (again based on experience) Igen would yield a higher return.

The Nexpress model we used was an old 2100 classic installed in 2005 or so, with 2500 upgrade. Like I said, there have probably been improvements.....

As far a Xerox is concerned, believe me when I say ... it will be the worst mistake you can make. Don't just take my word for it. Check other forums and ask about Xerox horror stories. Good luck.

I wouldnt totally call it a "mistake" but i hear where you are coming from.

If it werent for my rapport with them and my experience with printing in general, it would be miserable. There were times in the past I actually considered pushing the printers we had out into the trash even if it meant I were to be fired LOL... Sorrentos...complete rubbish. a bad design, made worse by adding a color unit to it. then not getting service when you need it.. ugh. but that experience is what gave me the patience and knowledge I have now, where i think the Igen is alright..

So, let me add: as long as you have the right person in front of it, and realistic expectations, the igen can be good.

I have runned Igen3 for 5 years, decent quality, not alot of maintenance but alot of downtime.
Now i run HP indigo, very good quality, more maintenence but not near the downtime of Xerox, our HP indigo ran nearly 4 months without having a technician from HP looking at it, my experience is with xerox is approx every 1-2 weeks.

I would go for HP indigo for high quality and uptime.
