CMYK and K only printing

I do not run an HP Indigo press but I use a printing firm that does. I publish photozines and books and I am trying to understand something. Many of the books I have printed are full colour, some are a mixture of colour and black and white images and some contain only black and white images. The black and white images are greyscale.

I am trying to understand why, sometimes, the black and white images are not printed with black ink only - I have had the same file printed beautifully with lovely neutral black and white images and then when I get it reprinted the black and white images are dark, muddy and have a blue or green tint.

It really is driving me mad!

There is an option of removing any icc profile when RIPing the file, also make sure you give images in CMYK form and not RGB

  • Just adding, the operator, or operators should keep using the same rip ticket template when printing your file. I mean, for example there is a hot folder or an output option named EPM (Enhanced Productivity Mode), where all blacks are converted to CMY only. The mentioned output is intended to print a CMYK only with CMY, simulating the black areas with these inks, as a way to lower costs when printing, but it has a negative impact if you're printing a pure black image because, only CMY will never look like a pure black printing. This is just another example of what can be done on a HP Indigo, of course the first thing to look is what mantman said.
