Why does the #4 ink form not have much adjustment left after installing a new roller? To the oscillator.

Are you certain it was ground to the correct diameter? Are you on the correct side of the eccentric?

The roller is correct. There is no eccentric

Gearing cut into roller socket is done in an eccentric manner. It's possible that you're on the wrong side, or "over center" of the eccentric.

How would you go about fixing that?

Remove roller, look at the way the gearing on the outside edge of roller socket appears. If, when roller was removed and the eccentric was turned the wrong direction, turn it to the other side. You’ll notice a “short” and “long” side of gearing, you have to be on the “long” side.

The journal that holds the roller just goes back and forth.

Sorry ‘bout that…I had a SM102 assembly in mind. Saw your pic and immediately realized my mistake. You mention to the oscillator, so you have full adjustment parameters to the plate, but not able to achieve an acceptable stripe to oscillator, or can’t back it away enough?

    Dear Tim,
When you install the roller and lock the latches check if there is a play (bounce) up and down (you can use a hard screwdriver), there could be a wear in the holder itself.
    For adjustment:
First make sure that the diameter is 65.5mm (I think).
Then, turn back the adjusting screws on the oscillator and to plate on both OS and DS.
Then turn in the roller to the oscillator parallel (you can use a strip of light paper on each side), until you reach some contact.
Do the same to adjust the roller to plate.
    Send us a feedback please.
    Good luck

    hi sir
this problem can occur if you are wrong about the diameter of the roller or if the roller is worn..
make sure that the diameter of the yellow roller is 70 mm and not 65 mm.
if the roller is of minimum diameter you cannot have contact with the oscillator and the plate
(the diameter of the yellow roller for the sm74 is 70 mm)
    good luck
