1982 GTO Conventional Dampening setup

Does anyone have a picture or the instructions how to set up these rollers? I got this press but I am used to Kompac dampners and this is my first experience with the convential dampening system. It's a 1 head gto-52. I have 6 rollers of various sizes and 2 sheets in a roll form. Looks like it should go around one of the rollers.

Can anyone help me on this. I'm at a loss on the setup.

Hi,

The set up is reasonably straightforward.

2 plate rollers and 1 vibrator roller & a link roller.

The plate rollers are linked by a steel roller with springs on the ends which lock into position by a set of levers.

It sounds like the plate dampers take a paper sleeve system instead of a molleton damper. The diameter should be around 48mm (not 100 % certain on the diameter). Normal moleton covered plate dampers have a diameter of 45mm. The dampers are locked in on the journals and the top damper is set to the oscillator by means of a small screw either side just by the top journals and with a medium pull on a .3mm shim.

(There is another type of plate damper system called a bareback and these are set with ink and the shiny chrome oscillating roller is normally replaced with a matte chrome roller).

These rollers are also driven by the plate bearers. Just double check which system your GTO has.

I normally set these to the plate by a very slight bounce on the setting screws located at the front with a blue plastic toggle device which is used to hold the plate dampers off the plate if required.

The vibrator will use a molleton cover and that roller should have a diameter of 45mm and is spring loaded to the pan roller and set to the oscillating roller by means of the 13mm adjuster near the sideframe above the vibrators journals. The vibrator needs to be on by the lever on the side of the m/c when setting and set with a medium pull with a .3mm shim.

I will try to put up a picture soon. I believe it has the molleton system. That would be the carpet looking rollers correct? I don't know if the previous owner mixed rollers from another press on this press but it looks like I have more than I need. Just to confuse me more...lol The rollers were all in a box so there may be more than I need or a mix of something.

I that case all the rollers will be the same diameter of 45mm............nice and easy.........lol.
Just roll the covers on, shrink with hot water and tie wrap at the ends.

Ok, here is what I have in rollers. Note, 1 and 3 are the molleton/carpet rollers. The rest are all rubber except 5 which is chrome.

And these are the visible slots I can see to fit them. Not sure of C and E. If you can help me match the numbers to the lettered slots, it would be a huge help.

Hi,

C is the locking mechanism for the chrome link roller which goes in the slot near A in the picture.

E (but closer to the questionmark in the picture) is the adjuster for the vibrator to the oscillating chrome.

The adjustment of the top plate damper to the ocillating chrome is the recessed screw between the A & B in the picture.

On the roller side 1, 2 & 3 look the same, 4 no idea.... lol, 5 linking chrome, 6 looks like a bareback

Hi. Mr H. Quick question on this? What exactly is 'D' in eddy's photos? Is this where the damper vibrator is supposed to go? What reason would the 'lock' have to refuse to accept the bearing on one side.. (I posted a thread called GTOZ with Conventional dampening.. Eddy's photos explain EXACTLY the nature of my problem.. I can't get the 'lock to accept the bearing on the right side..Donno what I'm doing wrong..! Thanks if you can help me stop pulling out the (sparse) hair I have left? )

Hi Noel,

The position D in the photo is where the vibrator roller goes.

Check you have the correct size bearing and if it is make sure it has been put onto the stock correctly, if one side locks up and the other doesn`t flip the roller to see what happens.

The D is the ductor roller. Goes back and forth between the water pan roller and oscillator.

The rollers in the pictures with the paper sleeves. The rollers has whats called 3m sleeves.Made by 3m. I don't know if they are made anymore. You slip the paper sleeves on the roller and wet them. It'll shrink to fit on the roller. They work pretty good back in the day.
