Sorry I meant to address that. That's normal otherwise you might flood the system with fountain solution. What I've done before is, mainly if I just want to stop and quickly reload paper, I'll stop feeding paper then hit the second button down to keep the press on water. Load paper quickly then manually go to ink then impression. No real way around it I believe. Thats where Kompac dampninig is great but not so much on a four color press.

I would prefer to allow visual cues of the plate to determine my metering settings. While press is running sheets you look at the plate and you will see if the plate is too wet or you will see uneven dampening. When you stop the press you will want to look at the plates lead edge for visual clues as to proper dampening. There should be a slight scum line at the plates lead edge and it should be EVEN across the width of the plate. If there is no visible scum line you will need to tighten down your metering until you see a scum line. If its uneven across the plate you may have to either tighten or loosen based on that scum line. Always remember that you should arrive at your final setting by going in the direction of tightening!!! That is to say that if you need more water you will want to open it up a little more than required, and allow the final adjustment to be a tightening action. By doing this you are minimizing the lash of adjustment gears.

OK. I had figured that out, just wanted to know if it was normal. This press is new to us. A 1997 model that was babied by one owner since new. It never ran faster than half speed. It is in great condition overall but I wondered if that could be wrong.
If you go to Devon contact me, I will be going back soon and we run a really nice restaurant on your way to anywhere West of Somerset. I would love to host you and give you a meal on the house.

I definitely will. We hope to make it back this year. Good luck with the press.
