Run w/o Chiller?

I run a 2007 6 color 40 inch diamond series.
Does anyone know if running without chiller will cause damage to the chiller or press?

 

Chiller is an option on most presses so the short answer is no. However, there are chemicals in the chiller water, that in addition to aiding thermal transfer, also act to reduce corrosion, just like the antifreeze in a water cooled automotive engine. If your chiller is not working properly, and management just doesn't want to spend the money to fix it ,then they should be aware of the risks. If its just a mechanical issue with the compressor or the condenser coils and the circulator works fine then by all means keep the circulator pumping at the very least on occasion. It should be noted that on longer runs, when run at a presses top rated speeds, you will miss the chiller feature. Most chillers also have heating features. First thing in the morning startups on a cold press will not be as easy either. The technology was developed for numerous good reasons. Unless a company just couldn't afford the repair, then why would you consider doing without it? Perhaps the company owner could postpone that new new Benz he has been eyeing, and take care of his equipment!!! Might be able to save a bunch of cash by finding a good local HVAC person to look at it, instead of spending the big bucks to have Mitsubishi or the systems manufacturer flown in with all the travel expenses ect.

We have had 2 company's come try to repair.
Result being we need an upgrade to the software. Cannot get software for original company, so we are replacing the computer with another companys computer and software.
As for running without it for a couple weeks, hasn't been as difficult as I thought it was going to be. I will be glad to have it fixed and back to normal.

 

Its good that you're able to print without it. A few tips that will continue to make it doable until you get everything squared away with your software.
1. Try to keep pressroom environment stable. This means doing what's needed to control pressroom temperature and humidity.
2. Try storing a decent size batch of your most used inks in this stable pressroom environment. Not advisable to take a can of ink from 90F storage
area and throw it into the ink fountain of a press thats been sitting in a 68F pressroom.
3. The evaporitive and cooling properties of isopropyl alcohol will help. If your running alcohol free you may want to add a bit on troublesome jobs
If your already running a small amount you might consider bumping it up until you get things sorted out. Particularly on long press runs at high
press speeds.
4. If your schedule allows for it consider running the press at lower speeds. The faster a press runs the more heat it builds up. Short runs no
Problem. Longer runs equal hotter rollers at higher speeds.

You should try to avoid running the press for too long (if at all) without liquid at least circulating through the chiller system. I’ve heard from more than one press installer/technician that you can damage certain parts of the system if you run it dry. Something about the unions up on the press, where they connect to the hoses. I even had one installer who wouldn’t allow the press to be fired up at all - even for a simple print test - without first making sure that the chiller system was completely installed, filled up, and operating correctly.

I don’t know if that means that it can’t be done, but I would advise being careful if you’re doing it.

 

No it won’t I ran a diamond 3000 for 15 years it only has water in chiller to cool rollers. Just turn off until you can repair it the water will get hot so bring up your damping until scum goes away

 

Hi one more thing if it an Absolute water chiller then you should check the small filter between tank and chiller. Because if clogged it will run your system dry over heat motor cause problems. It should be cleaned once a week. Open door look at chiller tank to your right the filter is left and down halfway to the floor take apart . Shut off levers that let water flow first so you don’t pour out the water then clean put back temp should go back to normal
