    Hello,

I am looking to purchase a SM 6+coater offset heildelberg.
I am having an option to purchase 4+2 with coater Perfect SM (1995 model) for less price.
My printing jobs are only straight 5/6 color with Varnish.
Does 4+2 perfectSM work the same as 6 color SM or is there any quality/maintenance problems to be faced?

    Hello sir,
For me I prefer the 6+coater, to avoid the expensive costs if any problems with happened at the perfector.
But if I were you, I will go with CD, to avoid the cost of the transfer jackets, especially if you want to print on thicker stocks.
    Good luck.

I would definitely go with a straight printing press over one that can perfect, especially if you’re not perfecting. And a CD press is always preferable to a standard SM.

I’m sure that by now, Heidelberg has improved on the design, but some of those earlier perfecting press models can be problematic. I’ve worked on a couple different ones and when they’re in straight printing mode, the image position after the reversing and storage drums is sometimes different than it was before them. You may have difficulty fitting the work, due to the image moving around and being inconsistent.

Not saying it’s a bad design and that it doesn’t work, but as these machines get older and parts start to wear, the reversing and/or storage drums can be one of the first things that develop an issue.

More maintenance required on a press that perfects. More things to go wrong. And every unit after the perfector, will instead of a smooth and easily cleanable print surface, have a textured jacket that can be a little more difficult to clean. All other things being equal i would say to go with the straight printing option and as mentioned shoot for a CD if possible.
