there are commercially available products if you want to spend the money, but vegetable shortening works pretty well as a open unit lubricant, or for storage. In the United States it comes under the trade name CRISCO. Could also use run of the mill bearing grease too.

Two common reasons for roller "shrinkage" are the leaching out of plasticizers from using harsh chemicals and solvents (i.e. nearly all of them !) and the "compression sock" effect caused by calcium contamination. Calcium Slayer & Flush is water-based, solvent free and cleans thoroughly. After usage many shops need to reset rollers because the ink, gum, paper lint, calcium and other debris that was encapsulated is removed and the rollers show "expansion". Roller maintenance is so important, yet so neglected. The majority of products and methods you use are ineffective. Clean rollers can and should look like this : KBA magenta unit. Before-during-and after three treatments. Middle photo shows the copious amounts of paper lint being purged. Calcium contamination is the root cause and too little attention is paid to it. Rollers last a lot longer than you think, when you use something that works and doesn't diminish the integrity of the rubber.

You can set the rollers away from oscillators during the holidays to prevent any damage to the roller surface or its form due to constant contact.
