Conventional damping is ok but you need a minder who knows how to run it, once it's running good, the quality should be the same as Alcolor. You can always add Alcohol up to 10% to your dampening solution. Good luck

What you really need is an operator that's old enough to remember all the tricks to running a press with conventional dampening. I think it would be fair to say, that many of the qualified guys I'm talking about, are either retired, or would rather not have to deal with all the extra work. Back in the days of conventional dampening a good multicolor pressman was highly skilled, and well paid. Most companies would rather not have to lay out the coin to get such a guy, and would wind up getting someone off the broom to run the press, and screw up a bunch of jobs while he learns!!!

It is an awesome machine, and will serve you well given it is properly maintained. A bit of extra work to run 4/c, versus a more automated machine such as the 74/2c, but also less repairs.

1992 SORMZ with Alcolor is a nice press, and if it’s in good shape, it may actually print better than an SM74. The key to quality and efficiency on some of these older machines is simply having experienced operators.
