Windmills are a good choice and work okay as far as platen presses go. They're ideal not only for basic die-cutting, but for other things as well. They're also fairly easy to set up and use. But because of the way the press operates, they may not be the best choice for a platen press.

Your best choice for a platen press is probably going to be a Kluge, or C&P type press. That's mostly because of the way that they operate, which delivers more pressure in terms of pounds per square inch. And also, due to the way that the die meets the platen, the pressure's going to be a little more even. This in turn makes them better suited for advanced die-cutting jobs, such as those that may require kiss-cutting, etc..

Shop I work at had a old Windmill and few other Heidelberg presses. They did a lot of die cutting, numbering and letter press stuff back in the day. They sat idle for years until the bosses decided they had to go. Tried to sell, donate, then give away. Sadly no takers. They were all sold for scrap.

We don't do much die cutting, but that is all our Heidelberg is used for these days. Need door hangers?. We have a client who uses a few in their sign shop. These things just go forever. Our work is not very fine, so I can't comment on that side of things
