iGen4 prints PS legibly, iGen5 prints garbage

I have a client that sends PostScript files that have printed well enough for several years on an iGen4. My boss wants to move this job to an iGen5. When the iGen5 prints the PS file, it prints garbage. The text is all over the place. An address that read "123 Any Street" might turn into "v ew Braunfels, Te_xas 681p0", and some of those characters might overlap one another.

For some reason, customer service is allergic to asking this particular client to provide better and/or different files that work great just like 99.99 percent of all other files that we receive work.

I distilled one of the problem PS files with Adobe DC Distiller. The same garbage that the iGen5 printed was now visible in the resulting PDF.

Did some research. Apparently the client uses something called Ghostscript and other non-Adobe stuff to make PS files, so I downloaded Ghostscript, remembered some DOS from years ago, and distilled the PS to a PDF by typing:

gswin64 -dQUIET -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=myoutputfilename.pdf myinputfilename.ps

The resulting PDF was perfect on my display. I was very happy.

When printing PS files on an iGen, it knows what to simplex and what to duplex, at least with all of the files that we process. Sadly, I lose this when I convert to PDF. As far as I know, I can print PDFs simplex or duplex, but if the document is mixed plex, I'm screwed.

So... I think that I need to do one of these things, whichever is easiest:

- Get Ghostscript to produce PDF files with simplex/duplex information that the iGen will recognize. I don't even know if this is possible with the PDF file format.

- Get the iGen5 (FreeFlow frontend) to grab whatever magic fonts that the iGen4 does when it successfully RIPs these PS files.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

 

whoa sorry old post. missed it.. what fixed this? ive had issues before, just not exactly this... more like missing print. or, job quits processing... sometimes just resending a new .ps works. or if ps convert to pdf...

its all dark magic to me....

I never did find a solution to my problem. It's definitely a font issue. Our Xerox tech says that our iGen 5 will be able to print these particular jobs if we change the front end to something called "Firey" or something like that. I must admit I'm skeptical. I was finally able to use Ghostscript to make these Postscript files into Postscripts that both our iGen printers can print well - unfortunately this customer uses mixed plexing and I never was able to figure out a way to keep the plexing code when I altered the original PS files.

So, all in all, this was one problem that I couldn't find a technical solution for.
