I have been operating a ManRoland 300 4 color press for 7 months now. It uses Botcher S3000 series fountain solution and alcohol substitute. After getting the press to density and running along, if the press is stopped and down for even five minutes or if we take break and come back, start back up the density jumps up 10 to 15 points higher and takes forever to come back down. Typically we are having to sheet ink off the ink rollers because of it. All 4 units do this and most inks. We use three or four different brand inks they all do this.
Fountain circulator is set to 13 degrees celsius. Fountain solution is change every couple weeks. There are two shifts.

If you're having to sheet ink off the rollers it suggests there is an issue with the press feeding in while you are idling the machine. have you observed the ink duct while he machinee is on idle?

Thanks for replying, rolandman. Good thought but, when we go on break the press doesn't remain idling. We come back from break an continue on a job we were just running an ink densities rise. This occurs even if we have to stop for 10 minutes to fix a marking issue. For example, we are running black at 1.70 it jumps to 1.85 after we start back up. If we keep it running with fountain turned off, it takes an extremely long time for the density to come backdown. Therefore we stop to sheet ink off. It's very strange.

I can't think of anything other than that. has it always done this or has it recently started?

Does this press run integrated, or segregated? The time it takes for the density to come back down, is that longer than it takes to initially make ready and start running on a job? The only thing that makes sense about what you are saying is ink emulsification. As you start running, the ink starts to emulsify (from water buildup in the ink train) and begins to pile slightly. Then, it takes more ink in the ink train than is necessary to print the correct density. When you stop printing for even a few minutes, that water dissipates and your over inked ink train now goes straight to the plate, creating higher densities. The reason it takes a while to come back down is actually the time it takes for the ink to emulsify again and print consistently. This will probably happen every time you start and stop, with every type of ink.

If the problem you're describing is an ink/water balance issue, try changing from integrated to segregated or vice-versa, and see if it makes a difference. If not, try a different water fountain mix ratio, or try a different brand and see if that helps.

alibrian, thanks for replying. What you describe could very well be what is happening. I am new to Manroland and alcohol substitute. Prior to working for this company I operated a Heidelberg running Alcohol. The Heidelberg did not have this issue so it is new to me.

They run the press segregated. I had attempted to print integrated right after I started with the company but had problems getting it to do it? When I selected integrate I watched the bridge roller as the press got up to speed, it would engage into the integrate position an begin printing but it would then disengage. I have no idea why the bridge roller disengages. Would you have any idea why the bridge/transition roller wouldn't stay engaged? I would like to try that.

Getting them to change fountain solutions would be next to impossible. There are two shifts an other operators so getting their acceptance would be tough. Changing the mixture might be possible.

    Thanks!

    alibrian,
Printing integrated tonight. Bridge roller is staying engaged. Will see what kind of affect it has after running a few jobs.

Welcome to the forum. Just a friendly reminder: please be sure that any requests for help or offers of help do not violate the copyright or licensing terms of the manufacturer. While I definitely commend the intent of helping people to be able to troubleshoot and maintain their own machines and get information on older presses and equipment, please don't get the forum into trouble by requesting or providing any restricted material. Generally operations manuals and manuals which are sold to the public are fine. It is fine to trade, request, or give manuals or tools as long as they are not prohibited from sale/trade and don't violate copyright (if they are out of copyright for example, or if the copyright holder allows them to be sold and resold and it's a legitimate copy.) It is fine to ask about the procedure for obtaining manuals, software, or tools legally and through proper channels. But please don't get the forum into trouble by asking for or offering any items which are restricted from sale by the copyright holder.
Thanks very much you for your understanding.
