My company is considering purchasing a Canon ImagePress (C850 or 10000). The prints the salesman brings look awesomely beautiful. I'm wondering if the quality from the machine will hold up over time. Also, are the ImagePress machines reliable or can I expect regular downtime for service? We are a printing company that currently runs two HP 7800 presses and are looking for a lower-priced alternative to offer.

Any feedback on the ImagePress machines would be appreciated.

Might be too late, but I figured I'd reply anyway...

    We have a 750 and a 10,000.
We got the 750 in November 2016 and the 10k December 2016. Both have been reliable and held consistent color. We also have a 6010 that we practically needed a cot for our tech it was down so frequently. We went from seeing a tech 3 times a week to once a month. We've put close to 1.3 milion on the 10k, and 60k on the 750 (it's just a proofer and emergency backup machine for us).

I basically have no real complaints with the 10k, but the if you were to purchase a 750 for production purposes avoid a bypass tray and opt for a paper deck. The bypass tray guides float and causes poor registration, plus it only holds about 15-20 sheets of cardstock, so it's pretty painful to use for production. The lower paper decks cannot handle anything thicker than 80# cover, so you'll definitely need a paper deck if you plan to run anything thicker without sitting next to the machine all day.

If you have done a compare of quality output with the other brands you will re-consider agaon your decision. There are only small no. units in the market since its launch c700/800 poor result had proven.

Our company, located in NYC, has put 11 million impressions on our C7000VP (with retrofittings for 7010 update) and recently obtained an 8000VP. After testing everything from Ricoh to Xerox, the 8000VP came out ahead while only the Indigo put out a better print. I can't say we weren't biased from our experience with the earlier model though, it was a workhorse. We're constantly running 350gsm, 4/4, at 13x19 in a number of different finishes (smooth, satin, C1S, etc.) and switching to text weights, 12x18 and 11x17 sizes in between larger runs to accommodate quick-turn jobs -- these operations put the equipment to the test to say the least. After a few minor glitches shortly after the initial install of the 8000VP, it has been stable and holds calibrations very well. We hit G7 without issue and we were within spec for G7 after 400,000 impressions without any tweaks, so again, stability. A lot depends on your technical service provider and the knowledge/experience of your operators and their familiarity with EFI-CWS.

Tested the C850 as a backup machine, struggles to push through our most popular media weights...probably because it's not rated for anything over 300gsm I believe. Prints are a little too saturated for our taste...well, our clients' taste anyway.

    Hey Hi
I too am a Canon user, and I just joined the forum
I took a call between Canon and Xerox,
The print quality is really much much better on the Canon, but I suggest that you check out the uptime on canon machines, the machine I have a C1+ is down more than up, and to be really truthful, I have made alot of losses as i am into commercial printing, and the machine would never stand up when a customer gave me jobs of 20 sheets and above
So i advice you check up service timing and uptime if you are into commercial printing, also the Clear toner doesnt get an outstanding effect as expected and shown by the Salespersons

Hi, we have a C700 that has constant problems and Canon Service cannot figure out a resolution, are there any other option to get the machine serviced?

The 850's are reliable, have an exceptionally lone duty cycle for a machine it's size, best color in the industry (just keep up with your calibrations)
And a unique PRISMA controller that's pretty powerful and G7 certified right out the box (if, you can part with Fiery and CWS)

Gloss optimization, and a plethora of substrate settings.

The 10000 is all this and more - Zero to little loss in run speed due it's duel fuser system.

    A phenomenal line all around.

We were delivered the PRISMA with our machine and it had constant issues. Not only did it not perform as specified, it had no job counter at all. You could not double check a job log against the machine counter. Calibration on the PRISMA was an ordeal that would take hours at a time. The PRISMA slowed down production of the machine to a crawl also, it made it run at about a 10th of the speed specified. Our Canon service technician actually told us, "I don't know why they sold you this, I have never seen one installed before". He was basically learning on our site to try to figure out issues.

We have also found through dealer testing of the Canon and other brands sided by side, that the color, substrate handling, "gloss optimization", on the Canon were are all just sales terms that could not be replicated on the actual unit.

I would like to see our print samples on the Canon you are talking about to the one we have.

I'm surprised to hear this. You should be able to access a menu with several print counters. Including a few just for the operator that can be reset on command (IE: A daily counter, clicks per hour, etc)

It was a bit slow on the draw in terms if its RIP speed. But I didn't experience a slowdown of the hardware after the file began printing.
The toughest part for me was that all of our other digital presses are on a Fiery controller, and all easily accessed through Command Workstation.
It's a tough sell having that one rogue machine on another controller.

I have a feeling that the features you just listed weren't enabled when the machine was installed. In service mode, the uppermost setting must be moved from it's default "0" to "1" - Then when you go into the media settings, you can access advanced media/media management.

From here you have almost every component of the machine at your fingertips. From conveyer speeds, fixing speed and pressure, primary and secondary transfer voltage, the gloss optimization scale - and so, so much more.
