I have a problem with yellow and cyan ink building up on blankets, transfering to impression cylinders and then dripping on sheets. using hostman- steinberg inks, prisco ctp fountain solution mixed with r.o. water, on a 2006 105 XL. any help would be appreciated.

hi i have had similar problem on roland press over last year or so and we have traced it back to poorly developed plates it always seemed to happen just before plate developer needed changing non image areas on plate were picking up ink nothing visible on plate but you would see a gradual build up on blanket after a couple of thousand impressions we do mostly short run jobs and it didn't really show untill larger runs. Have had problems before with the obvious inks emulsyfing and poor damper settings we dont have temperature controlled inking im from scotland but see a wide variation with how inks perform on the press between summer and winter and we dont have a great variation in temperature but the humidity seems to really affect the way the ink behaves on press i am of the belief that as with all things inks and board have been cheapened over the last three years or so and all suppliers now go for cheapest option rather than the best sounds to me like ink might be problem if all roller settings are done by the same person at the same time then its either ink or plates best of luck

Forgot to mention with us cyan plate was always the worst but it was the first plate through the ctp processor so as a small company often ctp could sit idle for three or four hours at a time hope this helps

How old are your rollers? And what series of Hostman are you running? Where is the ink building up on the blanket?

Some ink will always build up on the blankets and back cylinders of the paper area. When the buildup gets to the point of the ink slinging of the cylinders, I can only think of two issues; loose ink or over sensitive plates. You mention only yellow and cyan. Could the issue also be emulsification? Without resetting anything, you could change your rotation or the units you are using and see if that changes anything. Even getting hold of a different brand of inks would help to nail down whether your issue is ink related or press/plate related.

If you are using a 2 step fountain solution lower the alcohol sub a little.
