Hey guys need help please. I'm fairly new to printing, last 6 years, and I am having toning problems on my 1st print tower. It is toning in the form of a line on the left side of the paper. We run 20# bond paper. Size is 17.5" by 11". We are using hossman Steinberg process inks. We use compac dampening systems on both towers. Unit 2 will never tone but unit one does regardless of ink coverage or color. I have replaced all three form rollers and set them at a 3mm stripe to the plate. But it still tones. We use 8mm poly Plates. I have checked the stripe on dampener and it is about 3.5mm. Can't figure out what the problem is. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

What is the water nip on the Kompac set at? Check to see both are even. This is the adjustment that opens/closes the pressure between form and meter rollers. If they are set evenly open the left problem slightly side to increase water. See if it makes any difference. Kompacs are pretty simple units. If you other pressures are set well the water nip adjustment might be it. Compare where the nip is set at on the good working unit and try the same on the problem one.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I have already tried that and have set the nip the same as the first unit and it had no affect. Still toning for some reason. Any other ideas??

I don't have much history with Kompacs but is the pan roller under water all the way across. I've seen other dampners have problems because of a pan being skewed and the water not reaching the side. Hope you find a solution to your problem.

Dang that's strange. Is the unit binding up or was skewed/damaged somehow during installation? That's the only other thing I can think of that would cause toning on 1 side. Be sure both of those big springs are hooked up that assist the Kompac to engage. They are on either side of the mounting frame the Kompac slides into. Other than the unit itself double check all the brackets and linkages.

The kompacs only hold water in the nip between 2 rollers and is an even amount all the way across. (See attached below)
Next, all the springs and hardware are on and seem to be in good shape. Everything seems to match the other unit. As for the age of the water form on the units I have no way of knowing as we just got these presses last year from another company.

sounds like bad water form. could be glazed over or the rubber on end has come loose from the core and mushroomed out

Rollers my look fine but as the durometer of the roller increases with age the ability to transfer water decreases, causing tinting and lead edges scuming. This happens on all presses. Add to that if the company is using alcohol.

I would replace the rollers in the compact unit and put new bearings in. It obviuosly is not your fountain solution or the ink for its not effecting your other head. Sounds like a slightly swollen end or bad bearing in the compact.
