    Hello
I have bought second hand Large Format Printer CANON w8400, which was not in use for few month and without ink. I bought refillable carts and refillable inks, install them and did printhead cleaning with Pristine Fluid (special fluid for cleaning Canon printheads) and also install ne Maintenance Tank. So, everything seems to be ok, till its starts ink filling. It was filling inks quite long time. I thought OK, maybe its because of printhead was cleaned and it may take some inks to fill it back, but unfortunately it did not fill up, and than Maintenance Tank was full :( , so i bought new one and install it again. Switched ON printer and its automaticly starts in filling again, from beginning, and i did check Maintenance Tank, i can see that ink are going there again, i recon my Printhead does not take any ink, it seems that all inks goes through the Printhead straight in the Maintenance Tank.....
    Any ideas?????
Im new in Large Format Printing
    Thanks in advance anyone :)

it probably went straight into the waste tank, i had sooo much problems with my canon i took it to the tip....
sorry to put a dampener on it but the ink was expensive and the colour wasnt too great either.. ended up binning it and bought a hp. you can clean the maintenence tank out and reuse it if you go into the settings and reset...

The w8400 is somewhat an old model. If you were having the ink issues, it may have been the print head was possibly defective and not reading it through the start up stage. Otherwise, the print head chip isn't reading properly (which Canon has been replacing them at no cost if purchased within a year- possibly longer). You can still purchase a new print head if needed. We don't sell as many HP printers like we do with Epson and Canon.

    thanks.
but it does not display Printhead problem error, it just fills inks so long that most of the nks goes straight in to the Maintenance Tank through the HEAD...

honestly mate, i wasted so much money on mine and they arnt worth it.. print head alone is 500 quid. sorry but i feel i have to be honest with you... the only thing i can think of is if useing refillable cartridge, ie refilling yourself.. suck all the air out to cause a vacuum in the cartrdge first...

The problem is not the print head. The problem is with the ink cartridges. The 8400 has a probe that measures the pressure inside the carts and if they are not sealed properly it will send all that good ink directly to the waste tank. It does this in order to prevent a leak in case the carts are damaged. I know this because it happened to me once - wasted a full yellow cart this way. Check the carts and make sure they are sealed properly.

Regarding the waste tank - you don't have to buy a new one. You can reset it from the service menu. Obviously take it out and empty the waste ink first otherwise it will overflow. Once you've done that just put some cotton wool inside - to avoid splashes and that's it. Also, it might be a good idea to unscrew the chip before cleaning to avoid getting it wet. The chip is at the back of the waste tank. I've never bought a single maintenance cart.

Thank ROKK for advise, i very appreciate your help. Regarding to Maintenance tank, i just discover that few days ago that i can reset it, i did put some soft foam into the cart to avoid splashes.
I did use some cheap ink carts which i refill by myself. Now I bought reset chips for the carts and will try to refill original carts and replace those chips, i think that would help??!!
Maybe those cheap chinese carts was not so good quality???
    Thanks very much for help

You can disable ink checking from service menu so your chips won't "run out". The disadvantage is that the printer will ask you about the ink level each time you send a print - and you'll Press the "menu" button to a knowledge that ink level is ok. And you must also check ink levels on a regular basis to make sure you won't run out - otherwise you'll get a completely empty ink line and you'll have to open up the printer to fix that.

Buy some good refillable ink carts that have a proper seal on them to avoid any further problems. I wouldn't mess with the original carts trying to refill those.
