I am running a 2 color Itak 3985 with crestlines. I have a pal unit on the back unit which I use primarily to run black ink. I use silvermaster III plates and supermeg 220 fountain solution. I am getting a large horizontal band of toning 3.25 inches down from the lead edge of a 8.5 x 11 sheet. The band is 2 inches wide, darker in the center of the sheet and tapering off in density to the sides. It started as a small spot in the center and then spread towards the edges. If I turn the press of and start it up again it goes away for a few sheets and then comes back and gets progressively worse. I see now that another band is starting below the first one about an inch. I am assuming it is a roller pressure adjustment but not sure where to start. I was working late last night and finally just inked up the front unit and ran the job there and it ran fine so I am assuming its not the ink, plate or fountain solution. I know there is a guru out there who knows exactly where to look. Thanks in advance.

Check to see if any of your form rollers are moving side to side.

check your crestline roller strips sounds to me like your drying up to fast. 100 % your crestlines, they are touchy things rollers gotta be good or it won't hold the right water ink ratio. wouldn't hurt to double check those form strips too, your water form being the key one to check out if its hitting to hard it will bounce.

you have the 5 roll system or the 6 roll system? doesn't matter they are set the same. metering to pan is 5mm(3/16") metering to intermediate 3mm-4mm(1/8"-5/32") intermediate to oscillator 4mm(5/32") and your oscillator to form also 4mm and your form is to be at 4mm-5mm(5/32"-3/16")

the rest of your forms should be right around 3.5mm for nip

I have not. I am going to pull off the water rollers and give them a good scrubbing. To be absolutely honest J don't know how to make the adjustments to nip pressures. I installed the PAL unit myself with the help of a tech over the phone and the unit ran great for awhile.

On that particular press, is there a plate to blanket pressure adjustment? If so thete shud be a small window with a gauge frm 1.1-2.2 adjustment by a standard screwdriver. I operate a 1995 3302 that has one. Sumtimes when a blanket wears more u have to adjust plate to blanket pressure by using that adjustment. A new blanket I usually set it to 2.0 then an older to about 1.2. I've had to max out for sum card stock whick is the lowest number. But sumtimes I wud forget to adjust it back for thinner regular stock like 60# offset paper. And when I wud go to print I wud see a toning image approx 1 " frm the top of page. Tryin frm readjusting water form and #1 form but to no avail. Or opening up the crestline top roller to flood more solution and still issues. I'd even develope a slight tone mark on the bottom of the page too. When I finally noticed I had plate to blanket pressure maxed I backed it off and lost the toning altogether. Try that if it'll help.

To adjust the nip of a roller u shud have an operation manual that can give u detailed instructions to help u with that. If the plate to blanket adjustment isn't the issue.
