We have been having trouble ripping PDF's with gradients and complex transparencies. So far our only solution is to rasterize the press sheet postscript and then it will rip. We have tried different settings in InDesign including the transparency flattener but nothing works. We used to send postscript files to the RIP but we started having weird font issues i.e. font substitutions. Any help would be awesome.

Resave Files or Upgrade the RIP

The original Heidelberg Harlequin RIP v.4.5 that shipped with the DI presses is Postscript Level 2 and PDF v.1.2 compatible. If you are trying to print from CS2 or CS3 especially if the jobs contain transparencies, you may need to either upgrade your RIP software or find a way to resave the files. As far as I can tell PDF v.1.2 does not support transperancies (that would require at least PDF v.1.4 or later). If you can get a Harlequin RIP v.5.5 or later you could process PDF v.1.4 which would give you support for transparencies. Harlequin RIP v.5.3 would support PDF v.1.3, which depending on the files may or may not be enough of an upgrade. At least it would get you to Postscript Level 3. The other alternative is to send 1-bit TIFF files from an outside RIP or other application to your existing v.4.5 RIP. http://rti-rips.com/DIPrintPressRIPKits.html has more information DI RIPs. If you can get to a Harlequin v.5 or later you would have a better chance at processing the files correctly. Ultimately the RIP software really needs to get upgraded when the design application software does. Hope this info helps....

    Harlequin RIP Upgrade

Times DI - I believe you got very nice answers from the people in this forum... By the way, Prepressing is right, these matter has been on the industry for several years; every time there was an update on Postscrip Level or now PDFs version it is important to upgrade your RIP platform in order to rasterize newer files (such as PDFs with tranparencies).

We can offer you a good price for the latest Harlequin RIP Software and an additional disccount for a dongle trade-in. Please let me know if you are interested by sending me an email to info@alexias.com.mx

We also handle remote service in order to help you out with installation and future issues.

The latest version supports and handles perfectly the new PDF version - we can also include the plug-in for TIFF/IT (tiff generation) to send the file to toher devices.

You would need a plugin in order for your Harlequin RIP to work with the DI press. Depending on the version of your RIP you may also want to consider upgrading to v.8.1.

The dongle is what runs the software. Without it you cannot run the software.
